Combating Youth Unemployment: Investing in Our Future, One *Kabataan* at a Time

Kumusta, mga kaibigan! (Hello, friends!) For years, I’ve worked alongside young Filipinos. Youth unemployment isn’t just a number to me; it’s about the futures of our communities. From Cebu’s vibrant streets to remote barangays, I’ve witnessed incredible potential. But too often, opportunity is lacking. Let’s explore how we can change that.

Youth Unemployment: A Generation’s Struggle

The statistics don’t lie. Young people face higher unemployment than older adults. Economic downturns and ever-changing technology only make it worse. We’re talking about so many young people, fresh out of school, facing constant rejection. There’s a skills gap, little experience, and a job market that never stops evolving.

Then came COVID-19. Entry-level jobs vanished, especially in tourism. Young people were left scrambling. Even with recovering economies, the job hunt remains tough.

ALMPs: Giving Young People a Fighting Chance

What can we do? Active Labour Market Policies (ALMPs) are one answer. Governments use these to improve the labor market, particularly for those struggling to find work. Think of it as bayanihan (communal unity): a collective effort to connect job seekers with opportunities.

What Exactly Are ALMPs?

ALMPs take many forms:

  • Job search help: Resume tips, interview practice, and effective job-hunting strategies.
  • Skills training: Short courses, apprenticeships, and on-the-job training to teach in-demand skills.
  • Entrepreneurship programs: Funding, mentorship, and business advice for young entrepreneurs.
  • Wage subsidies: Incentives for employers to hire young people by covering some of their salary for a while.

It’s about tailoring these policies to the local job market. What skills do employers need? What industries are growing? By answering these, we can make sure ALMPs actually work.

Success Stories: Where There’s Hope

It’s not all bad news. Some programs are truly making a difference. Germany’s Dual Training System, for example, combines classroom learning with real-world work. Graduates are ready to work from day one. That’s smart.

And I’ve seen microfinance initiatives empower young entrepreneurs. Small loans and business training help them create jobs. One young woman in Cebu started a catering business with a microloan. Now, she employs others and is a community leader.

Skills Are Key to Unlocking Opportunity

In today’s world, learning never stops. A degree isn’t enough anymore. We need to embrace lifelong learning and constantly improve our skills.

Why Vocational Training Matters

Vocational training is vital. Many in-demand jobs need specific skills, not four-year degrees. Welders, electricians, plumbers, IT technicians – these are essential trades with stable jobs and good pay. Investing in vocational training is a smart move.

But it’s not just about technical skills. Soft skills like communication and teamwork are just as important. Employers want well-rounded people who can adapt and work well with others. Develop these skills through workshops, volunteering, and activities.

Networking: Relationships Matter

In the Philippines, we value pakikipagkapwa-tao – our shared sense of community. This extends to the job market. Who you know matters.

Networking isn’t just about collecting business cards. Build real relationships with people in your field. Go to events, join organizations, and connect on LinkedIn. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice. You’d be surprised how willing people are to help.

Also, talk to your family and friends. They might know of opportunities you don’t. Your network is your net worth.

Stay Strong, Be Courageous

Finding a good job can be tough. But it’s not impossible. It takes resilience, determination, and a willingness to learn. Don’t give up after rejections. Learn from them. Keep improving your skills, expanding your network, and pursuing your passions.

Investing in our youth is not just right; it’s essential for our economy. By giving young people the skills and resources they need, we unlock their potential and build a better future. Kaya natin ito! (We can do this!)
